A. V. Mellano

Mr Aimable Victor Mellano
of the Hutchinson Tyre Company London presented to the British Motorcycle Racing Club in 1925 a solid silver trophy which the club choose to name after him and to this very day is Bemsee’s most treasured award, it was valued at £250 guineas at the time. (an average London house in 1925  cost £359 and the average yearly wage was £156).

It is the largest, most valuable and one of the oldest trophy's in British Motorcycle racing and it was originally awarded to the outright winner of the handicap 100 mile race at Brooklands. Mr Mellano lived at Thames Ditton fairly close to the Brooklands circuit and was a very keen supporter of motorcycle racing. He had a vested interest as his company Hutchinson Tyres was based in City of London, when the city was still the place to manufacturer things, the company manufactured tyres not only for motorcycles but also bicycles, something which the company still do to this day.

Tyres were also manufactured in France, where there was a battle for product supplier to the Tour de France. In 1955 Hutchinson tyres were the winners of La Tour with Louison Bobet He was the first great French rider of the post-war period and the first rider to win the Tour de France in three successive years.

Over the course of Hutchinson’s 120-plus-year history, they’ve won 24 Tour de France titles, co-developed the UST tubeless mountain bike system, and led the development of Road Tubeless. Outside of the bike industry, Hutchinson have supplied bullet proof run-flat tires for the US president's motorcade, and tires for aerospace, military and automotive applications.

Mr Mellano was also an avid designer and held several patents in the USA for pneumatic seats for both motorcycles bicycles and cars. ( see separate PDF )
